Burnout Revenge

Platform: PS2, Xbox 360, Xbox

Synopsis: This time it's not about winning. It's not about riding on dubs or gaudy neon lights. It's about an utter disregard for the rules of road and total domination. This time it's personal. This time it's about revenge. The sequel to 2004's racing game of the year, Burnout Revenge straps gamers into the fastest, most dangerous racer on the road. Fight dirty or go down in flames - the only rule is complete automotive anarchy. Built for unprecedented destruction, Burnout Revenge challenges gamers to exact their revenge on rush hour traffic, vindictive rival racers and anything else that gets between them and the finish line. Featuring multi-level tracks designed for fighting, wicked vertical takedowns, explosive new crashbreakers, new gameplay modes and wide open crash courses for epic crash sequences that put Hollywood to shame, Burnout Revenge redefines speed and aggression for the ultimate in vehicular combat. And when gamers are ready to take their rage on the road, a massive suite of online modes and features open up endless possibilities to slam, shunt and stonewall new enemies all over the world. Happy hunting!

We Say: Pure adrenaline high, with a strong shot of sweet revenge thrown in. Burnout Revenge is my favourite PS2 game by far - fun enough to be a game, just technical enough to reward improvement and skill. I particularly like the regularity with which I, as a player, am rewarded with trophies and new cars - even if they all drive the same. This is the one game I go back to time after time. Mike.

Gran Turismo 4

Platform: PS2

Synopsis: In Gran Turismo 4 the characteristics of the cars are realistically designed and calculated so that they handle as per the real-life physics of that particular vehicle, taking into account weight, speed, friction, wind and more. New technology immerses the player in real-life environments such as New York City and the Grand Canyon. Highly detailed vehicles and environment mapping create broadcast-quality graphics, from light and competitor car reflections on the player's automobile to leaves on a tree shaking in the wind. In offline gameplay, players will have the opportunity to race in enhanced arcade and simulation modes, experiencing more than 500 authentic automobiles from manufacturers around the world, with a range from vintage to modern vehicles. Courses include existing closed racing circuits to specially designed city courses, reaching a total count of up to 100 tracks.

We Say: The best Driving game on PS2, bar none. This game is a monster...a huge number of tracks and cars and enough races and challenges to keep you going for months. Of course, the highlight for any petrolhead has to be the Nurburgring, all 13 miles of it. Having seen numerous in-car videos of the real thing I’m impressed by how accurate the GT4 version is. It looks stunning (for PS2) and sounds good too and the handling is simply sublime, especially with a decent steering wheel (Logitech Driving Force Pro is my weapon of choice). For sheer driving pleasure and handling finesse, no other PS2 driving game comes close. It’s not perfect though. Computer driver AI is crap, with cars sticking almost entirely to the racing line, getting a good start off the line is nigh-on impossible and with only 5 other cars racing against you (1 if you choose an open top car) it’s hardly immersive (TOCA Race Driver 3 is better for racing action). Take my advice, for the best race experience, stick to Arcade mode, choose your favourite car and track and turn the computer AI up to 10...now there’s a challenge for you! Gav.
